Still cloudy but no rain
Wow diary, what a day.
This morning I woke up at dawn, quite energetic. The pillows were so soft! Mmmm, I wish I can just dive in it now, it’s like sleeping in a cloud…. But! I owe you today’s story.
I asked around for directions to get into the city, and they pointed north, through the woods.
I reached the gates of the city. It stood with high rising walls, and giant metal gates. The soldiers checked my pass for security measures and I had to wait for a while when they inspected my weapons. Then I think someone recognised me...
“Hey, aren’t you the famous ranger Cybella?”
“Uhm, I don’t think I’m that famous…”
“Wow! You’re really her then! My niece is all raves about you! Oh, you coming for the Coliseum, eh? Of course you would… No wonder. Ey!” He shouted at his colleagues, “Let her in, she’s the real deal!”
Real deal? Of course I’m the real deal, right? Sometimes you just can’t help people judging you cuz you’re small and young and not very muscular looking. But I guess I don’t have to be rude anyway.
“Haha, thank you so much. That’s really nice of you…”
“Ey, miss, if you need any help, just run here and I can give you a hand, alright?” As the gates goes down, “Also maybe you’re free to meet my niece one day? We’ll definitely come see you on the day of tournament, for sure!”
“I don’t mind, if I have some time. Hey, mister --.”
“Name’s Marco!”
“Mister Marco, do you happen to know any guilds hiring that I can join? Looking for some work around…”
“Ah, a guild you say? There’s a few good ones… Usually I would recommend any adventurer to go to the good old Black Kells, but miss, I think for someone like you, miss, you should head to the Capre Noctem. They’re always looking for skilled members, I’m sure you’re the right fit!”
Sounds ominous. They sound like they just wanna kidnap people’s daughters for a lot of money or something?
“Thank you again, for your help.” I shook his hand, because that’s what papa does, “I’ll be heading off then.”
“They’re just down by the end of High Street, big white building, you can’t miss it.”
“Okay!” And I waved him goodbye.
People must be really nice here?
The capitol is a big city. The streets are bustling with people starting their days. It was barely sunrise when I was there! There’s so many shops I’ve never seen before -- there’s boutique for pretty dresses for the rich daughters of noblemen, a very busy bakery full of people shoveling to get the freshes breads, young post carriers dropping off by the mailboxes (there was a cute red-haired one who winked at me), restaurants serving hot porridge and tea and ham… I might want to get some hot porridge later.
I gradually made my way to the City Square, and there was a huge statue of a majestic man, our King Alexander, the almighty noble one. Standing there looking all sombre and royal. I’d rather it was our pretty princess instead, but I digress. Theia’s missing after all.
Eventually, I came to a subtly decorated white building. Fences were high, looking very solemn. There was a rather elaborate gold plated sign with their name “Carpe Noctem” on top of their door.
Even though it’s busy on the High Street, it felt like I stepped into another world that’s only silent, when I’m near it.
I pushed open the gate, and entered the door. The corridor was greeted by red carpet (seriously?) and lots of white pillars. Ok, you should this feels way too important. I think they’re really rich. I’m not sure. But the reception is at the end of the corridor, and I proceeded towards it.
No one was there at first, so I rang the bell. Ding ding ding.
But nobody came. The silence was creeping me out, to be frank.
Ding ding ding.
I waited for a while since nobody is coming. There were a lot of postings on the bulletin board: -
TITANS OF THE COLISEUM, SIGN UP AT THE OFFICE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE.
Oh, I forgot I have to register. So much gold for entry as well, eek.
URGENT! LOOKING FOR CAT. SOMETHING SOMETHING
WANTED. EXPEDITION CREW FOR MYSTERIOUS MONSTER AT STONEGRASP. BIG REWARD. DEAD OR ALIVE. HIGH REWARD.
LOOKING FOR INDIVIDUALS. HIGH RISK ESCORT MISSION. PLEASE REFER TO DESK FOR MORE INFORMATION. BLA BLA BLA
Something along those lines.
DING DING DING. I thought I was going to break the bell for pushing it so hard.
I could hear a pair of heels clapping on the floor, approaching from the backdoor. A blue haired girl, flushed red in the face, came to receive me. She looked flustered, but maintained a professional manner, “Good morning, Madame. Welcome to Carpe Noctem. How can I help you?”
“Uhm, good morning. I was recommended by someone to look for a job at the Guild. Do you have anything left for a mercenary?”
“We currently do not receive any applicants without recommendation from our guild members or our clients.”
“I - er - I’ve won a lot of tournaments around the country, is there a way I can prove myself, or a trial mission or something?” I tried to show her my tournament records and told her a few of my achievements. I even showed her my beautiful bow. I wasn’t really sure I could convince her to join, to be honest. But I wouldn’t be so bummed anyway since there’s still the Black Kells I haven’t visited.
“It says here you are Cybella. Is that true?” her tone changed a bit, “Please wait for a moment, miss, I shall be back.” She went through the backdoor again.
And while I was waiting, I heard the gate from behind opened, and I turned around and vaguely saw a tall figure approaching.
Click clack click clack. He’s coming closer.
...Tt felt like some horror play in a big mansion setting because the atmosphere was so eerie.
The stranger walked by me and looked at me. And wow, it actually was that guy from the Inn yesterday (don’t ask me why I remember him). I somehow didn’t notice he had an eye-patch. He leaned on the counter next to me, looked at me, and tapped his finger, probably also waiting for the Receptionist girl. I couldn’t help awkwardly look around because he’s probably the dullest thing to stare at. He's not super good looking, but he has a certain aura around him that oozed confidence.
She came back after a few minutes, “Oh!” she exclaimed, “Master Kane, you’re here at the right time. We have a new applicant, this young lady right here -- she was wondering if she can have a trial run.”
The stranger looked up and down at me for a few seconds, and said, “What, her?”
You could tell he’s really impressed by his exciting tone. Excellent.
“Yep, her. By the way her name is Cybella.” I tried to be as nice I could managed. But I can’t guarantee any major bad behaviour.
“Jenny?” He scoffed it off, waiting to hear from the receptionist. Somehow I had a feeling I saw someone who looked like her at the checkpoint.
“Sir, I’ve checked up on her, she has won 5 tournaments in the last 12 months, and even placing high ranks in national ones. I think she’s worth a try.” she hands him some documents, “Since you haven’t placed your nominee this year yet, maybe you can bring her to a trial run, and discuss about it after that?”
I wasn’t quite sure what’s happening at this point.
This Master Kane dude naturally let out a heavy sigh, with the most annoying expression and all, and told me, “Alright, you can come with us tomorrow. Meet me back here at 9 in the morning. We’re travelling so bring change of clothes. We’ll give you food. Jenny can tell you everything.”
What, that's it? I got a job cuz he said so? He set down the papers and swiftly exited the room through the backdoor. I just stood there looking dumbfounded.
“Uhm, sorry, what’s happening? Where am I going?”
“Madam, in our guild, we need recommendations before you can join. Master Kane is one of our Senior Officers and he has agreed to let you join him in a trial run so we can access your candidacy…”
“Candidacy for what?”
“Every year, an Officer must recommend a candidate, either within the guild or personal acquaintance, to promote the tradition of receiving new blood, so we could keep the practice of nurturing new talents in the field. Master Kane usually recommends his sister, but she had decided to leave us to pursue for another position, therefore he must recommend another…”
“Right.” Well, a chance is a chance. “So where am I going tomorrow?”
“You’re going on the hunting expedition to the Stonegrasp tomorrow.” She showed me the bulletin notice identical to the one on the board, “Any questions?”
“What do I need to bring?”
“Your journey will take one day, and usually hunts like these takes one or two days at most. Bring enough for five would be appropriate. The guild will take care of everything else. It would be wise to bring your best equipment. The enemy is said to be air-borne, that’s why Master Kane took the mission at the first place. And since you’re a ranger, it makes sense to have you on the hunt.”
“Wait what, that Kane guy is a ranger also…?” And it hit me. “Oh wait, HE is THE Kane? The Valiant? Like the ACTUAL Valiant?”
“Yes, miss.”
WOT?! The fantastic magnificent greatest tremendous legendary Ranger is HIM? The TWAT?
JUST WOT. (I know, right?)
In my disbelief, I was stunned, “Miss?”
“Oh,” I had to come back to my senses. “I see.”
“You have to fill up this form --” I did some paperwork and discuss more details and departed the gloomy, white mansion.
Yep. I mean, it’s pretty unbelievable. But at this moment, I think I was rather shocked and slightly perplexed, than excited. The pay is decent at least. If I’m making this much for a trial run, I wonder what a regular member makes.
I shopped around the town for some extra equipment, and went back to the Inn.
Nothing else interesting happened, I guess. I was quite tired from visiting the City.
I guess now that it has finally sunk in that I’m going to a hunt with the Valiant Kane, now that I'm done packing. I can’t stop feeling really excited about what’s going to happen tomorrow.
Somehow it’s all going well after I’ve arrived. This place is probably lucky for me? Ahh exciting! My first expedition and it’s going with a Valiant! But he’s such a jerk though. I guess it kinda makes sense that he’s around the Capitol at this time. Maybe he’s always been here, just no one knew. But maybe I could learn something? Or maybe I’m sooo good that he’s going to be super impressed by me.
Haha. Don’t think too much, silly Cybella. Just be.
Good night, diary! I can dive into the soft clouds again…

Plus, I can't believe Cybella still don't find Kane-sama visually attracting... T_T I'm sure she will though, like, very soon. (insert evil laugh here)
About the candidacy thing, I'm a bit lost here. So, every year they're accepting new guildies that are recommended by officers? (If so, then Winry...?)
But overall I enjoyed this one too. Was about to immediately reply this morning but I had to do something. Which is.. this.

I'm sorry everyone
My computer fried last week and it is currently sleeping in the repair shop to be fixed. I'm still writing on good old pen and paper and have finished drafted at least another 4-5 parts of the story.
Since I'm unable to edit my drafts I can't post new entries of the story, and I'm not sure when my computer will be back.. (Harder to estimate due to year end) Rest assured, they will come back!
I'm so sorry for this.
And if you're here waiting for the next entry, thank you so much for your support (I know it's very little of you, haha).
Anyway, happy new year and let's look forward for 2017 (and crappy amateur VF fanfiction yayyy)!!

Ok, so I completed 24-3 (Normal).
