Been in the game for less than a week. Spending my gems purely for heroes. Is there a point in the progression where a player is better off rolling gem gear instead of hero.
In for team, my potential 5 stars are kiera, Vincent, theresa and 2 x cebella

IMO the gear summon is not worth it, you can always farm gear or craft them,, while you can't get the hero from anywhere else.
If you do gear summon and get good 5* equip, then it will just be one piece of a random set and you need the whole set for it to be good since set bonus is really important.

For a newbie, who is not whaling hard, you will want to get the most bang for your buck. So, you'll go into the 'use gems for summoning heroes' mentality.
However, for those who have already crafted their PvP teams, the main staying point is to win PvP battles.
And since you can't really farm for 5* equipment, and materials to make a single piece of 5* equipment is difficult to farm as well, its ok to summon them. However, due to the recent patch that allows equipment to be upgraded to +15 and then gain a star improvement, makes it seem similar to the hero side... except equipment can't go out to fight by themselves
Added to that, the effect of sets...

I would spend on heroes since equips can be farmed
