VF has introduced several interesting concepts from preventing heroes getting instant KO in arena.
1. Positioning Aura with Def stats increment. Example: Passive Aura like Paladin Victoria's Aura <Eternal Aegis> absorbs 30% damage taken by allies place within her aura.
2. Positioning stacking by having allies place between your opponents and yourself.
3. Rune Systems to help boost specific stats. The rune system is unknown to most players because it is unlocked at certain level. I suggest creating a HP/Def rune bonus sets if your Zedd is dying too fast. Although defense is important, you do not want to forget the purpose of Zedd in arena. Is he a bait/dummy? Or is he used as a primary AOE dealer?
4. Equipment. There are set items and also prefixes allocated to the items. For example <Item of Defence> normally carries Def stats.
5. Upgrade your heroes. Limit Breaking is considered end game content and is very pricey so for starter, just go for +2 which already increase quite an amount of stats.
6. Ally Heroes' Skills. Heroes like Inquisitor Lucille's Skill <Blessings of the Sun> shields party can help your Zedd to survive a bit longer. That is if you Zedd don't die first.
But.. Even with all these mechanisms set in place. There are some undeniable results where a Lvl 40 Dragoon Vincent piercing and killing 1 lines of heroes because that is the difference between you and the opponent.
