I believe that 50 friends isn't enough. I feel bad whenever I have to cancel or reject a friend request due to not having enough friend slots.
I wouldn't mind having to spend 10 gems to increase the list by 15 or so, personally.

or every 5 level up garrison added +5 friend list

Or a building called, Inn or Restaurant  where your friends can "visit" your garrison, 

Function: Increase friend limit by 3 every building level , max level 15
Expedition quest yields : XP potions
