Arena and why we love to hate it

Wed Sep 21, 2016 5:04 pm

So, a little background. I'm 2.5 weeks in the game I'm finally ready to take on the arena rank chasing dream, and boy has it been a ride. I'm currently on top spot, and while it's mostly been an exhilarating blend of adrenaline and rush, there are also downsides to the game mode. I understand it's beta and I don't expect it to be perfect (yet), so here's what I have.

The good:
  • It's the only thing PVP we have available now, lets us compare whose epeen is bigger and revel in virtual meaningless rankings
  • It forces people to think about their team compositions and strategise (Isabella anyone?)
  • It's a good break away from monotonous energy/lulu grinds
Now for the bad, *deep breath*:
  • The stat nerf - This alone renders warriors, archers, and thieves near useless. All 3 classes need to heavily boost their stats to be of any use. It's glaring when an AI controlled enemy archer 1 or 2 shots my backrow 50% mage, while my archer deals 2k to theirs.
  • Continuing above, warriors, and thieves to a lesser extent, sacrifice survivability in order to deal good damage. What happens when we nerf their damage output? They're useless thrash, that's what happened. Thieves are only used because Magebane silence/stun OP. Warriors? I don't use any, for good reason lol.
  • The team on defense is heavily favored. The stat nerf causes this (again, it'll be a recurring theme) I understand the need to give the AI an edge, but making 3/5 available classes thrash by default is a tad overhanded, to say the least. Furthermore, warriors/archers are really only good on defense. Feels like a cheap cash grab scheme to me.
  • Isabella. An AOE silence on turn 5 is way too good. Seriously. Between 2 Isabella teams, the only thing that matters is who starts 2nd, because bella starting 2nd means AOE silence first means ezwin. Something needs to change here. Counters are possible if you have good archers and their stats weren't nerfed to shit. (ps: they are nerfed to shit).
And now for the (proposed) solutions!:
  • Remove/heavily adjust that stat nerf. Really it does nothing but give the AI an unfair edge and screws over 3/5 of the cast, and 1/2 the possible lineups.
  • Implement some form of diminishing return for crowd control skills. It's too damn good now. Maybe the 2nd cast loses 1 turn of it's duration if it follows the first directly?
  • Really those 2 I suggested are just the start, more suggestions are always welcome. If the 2 above are implemented, it'll change the entire arena meta drastically, and it'll be another mad race to find the next OP team comp, or OP toon, or whatever. The point now is there are too little viable compositions, and it will get stale very quickly if things don't change.
All in all, I have to say Arena is loads of fun, yes there are problems, but for someone who loves PVP, it's a good, quick fix. It has so much potential because of how solid the combat is in this game. Please make full use of it :)

Cheers, LoonChop

Wow, that's one of the explanation <3
I never thought that far for Arena because I keep focusing on how my squad can defeat the opposing team XD
