I like the Set Bonus mechanic. Its brilliant.

Why is it so? Because you can't just dump money, get a 5* weapon and start facerolling everyone. The bonus stats from a full set of 2* or 3* gears still win over a single 4* or 5* gear. This force ppl to progress at a reasonably controlled pace. Giving f2p/new players a better chance against others and more time to acquire stronger gears, since the power gap is narrowed and moving in controlled pace. Not throwing cash down and fly straight to the moon. :p

Yeah and even the "find the object you need" from the set is a really nice implementation..
Usually people are forced to go to wiki pages and forum over the net only for know where is the X item, but like that everything is a lot more smooth

 a little bit of Brave Frontier, Seven Knights, Clash of Clans, Summoner's War, Chain Chronicle, Final Fantasy tactics... so there's a little bit for everyone ~
the real strategy in this game is how you form a squad, maximizing their abilities and deficiency  

I don't want to fully say the game is "P2W", but it's pretty borderline there.

Gem acquisition is outrageously low at some point, compared to JP mobile game. This hurts F2P players a lot.
(The Gem cave upgrade is too far in progression for F2P to remotely start gaining traction early on)

They keep bombarding you with annoying shop-related options, which is completely out of line.
I have yet to play a JP mobage that does this. This is a big NO-NO, and will only annoy future gamers.

My experience with SEA-based mobile games is low though. I don't know if this is the norm.

You are not completly wrong, from my experience of gatcha games usually the shortage of gems comes after 2-3 weeks of playing 3-4 hours for day.
In Valiant force you get shortage after 3 days, and i'm not joking.
You can make 3 pulls of 10x heroes if you are free to play gamer in 2 weeks of gaming because you don't get anything more in terms of gem after you achieve heroic maps (you can't get more because there is a big wall that say "nono" to free to play players until they get some 5* units

¿How about a set of 5*?

Maybe the limitation of gem and bonus because we're still in closed beta, let's jope they will buff up the bonus in offcial launch
And also the need to give garrison more menaning, like the salvage yard, or the weapon smith, didn't really give impact to the game progress

Other than that, this game has lot of potential in terms of gameplay

I just want to say that I was able to get several 10x hero pulls in my first couple weeks as F2P (before APK users could spend). I was able to complete Heroic mode with a squad of four 4* and one 3*. There isn't a wall for F2P players until Legendary. If you want to know how to do that, I used 3* limit broken robin paired with 4* hunter auron and 4* spell breaker isabella - they can trigger off each other and get high combos... I have seen a 9 trigger combo multiple times with them... point is that there are ways to progress without spending money.
