I fail to understand why people complain about this rune merge. before this how do we even get 5* stats rune? aside from previous bazaar? there's no regular way to obtain it. 
now the Dev give us a way to get it. although not easy. but still there's a way.
 
Obviously it's more intended for end game player with maxed out rune. While I also may not use it now because I'm still building rune for most of my main char, I still think it's a good addition and IMO it's quite balance. not far out of reach like previous raid release. hard but achievable. Kudos for Dev for this one from me.

Let put it in terms you'll understand:

*Before this patch*
Getting 5 star runes: Events and/or spending money
Situation: I have very few/no 5 star runes.

*After two years without this patch*
Getting 5 star runes: Events and/or spending money
Situation: I still have few/no 5 star runes.

*With this patch*
Getting 5 star runes: Tedious process of farming runes and merging them + events + paying
Situation: I have few/no 5 star runes.

*With this patch after 2 years*
Getting 5 star runes: Tedious process of farming runes and merging them + events + paying
Situation: I have at least 60 5 star runes. 

Honestly dude, in all your post you're just complaining without offering any real solution to the things you brought up  :/

And tbh, all my guildmates are already using the rune merge function, so your point that no one will use this system is pretty much void, you say that the system doesn't work well cause it's too hard, but in other games like seven knights it pretty much WAY MORE grindy than what we have in VF and way less generous in terms of free gifts. 

You can get at least 91 3 star runes per week, which seems to speed thing up by A LOT, so tbh I don't quite understand why you're throwing a tantrum.

Why even entertain this OP? He wants the game on easy mode, not wanting to work for it but want everything handed to him on a silver platter. People should be more grateful there is even a feature such as this to get higher * of runes made accessible to everyone. Before this 5* runes were only accessible through costly bundles, top ladder rewards, and highly RNG reliant bazaar rune tickets.

He thinks he speaks for the majority of the player base but he only speaks for himself.

Where do you even get that number? maybe you're part of Dev, who have real data? if so then maybe you're right. If not then it's just your opinion. and i won't argue any longer, as it's useless. everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

As one of the players that have access to the skill/stat rune bazzar during christmas, i regret burning those 5* rune. Esp vamp double strike. Hai. How i wish that will come back?

As for the first poster, if you have played the event that gives skill runes, you will realised that this feature is a gift, and i am quite sure there will be a shard that can upgrade skill rune. Why? You see the ad during each game, you realise there is round shard and hexagon shard. Which is not found in the game yet. So like the grand pixie, they might include in.
The merge feature is for f2p players like me that 4* really need luck and capitol mostly drop 3*. And upgrading those 3* to 4*. From 4* onwards is really for whales. I upgraded 1 and my stats drop and to bring that 5* up again, i need alot of resources. So this feature is to help u in the long run. Not now. But when you have built your entire +15 and reach a road block.

I think it is just that, after "hyping" up the rune merge feature for a bit, the majority of the player base has found the implemented feature to be a bit "out of reach". This is a bit like the guild raids, where when it was first rolled out, pretty much only the top 3 to 5 guilds were able to even clear past the first boss, and the rolled out feature is just... disappointing... to use a mild word.
This is the part I'm concerned about, where the majority of the player base is disappointed yet again after the big hype surrounding guild raid or summoners, the initial implementation of which left many with unpleasant experiences (guild raid not doable by average guild, arena imbalance, frustration of power creep, repetitive content etc.). Majority of players won't bother to post here or give feedback; they just quit. Half of my 60 friends list on Taiwan server have stopped playing for at least 2 weeks or more.

This new rune merge feature I think is to cater to the top 5-10% of the player base, and perhaps shouldn't have been hyped up so much. It is currently irrelevant to me, but maybe sometime next year it might be, who knows? Or I might still need to save the 3* runes for new heroes instead of merging them for existing heroes.
